Hired to tell the island's story
We were brought in during St. Thomas Carnival — the most important cultural week of the year in the U.S. Virgin Islands — to produce a documentary on a tradition that sits at the heart of island life: horse racing at the Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack. The brief was to capture not just a race, but a community.

Carnival week, full intensity
Race day during Carnival is electric — packed stands, pounding hooves, and generations of families who treat the track as sacred ground. Shooting in that environment meant working fast in heat, dust, and crowds while still finding the quiet, human moments in the stables and paddock that give a documentary its soul.
Capture a live, one-shot event at broadcast quality
There are no second takes at a horse race. We had to deliver broadcast-standard footage of unrepeatable, high-speed action — while simultaneously documenting the riders, trainers, and culture surrounding it. That demanded years of live-television camera experience, precise positioning, and a small, agile crew that could move with the day rather than fight it.
